Letting Go

Over the past two weeks, I have spent my weekends cleaning out the clutter in my life. I spent one entire weekend cleaning out my complete wardrobe and I was simply amazed at the amount of clothing I own versus actually wear. This past weekend, I spent countless hours going through all my belongings in storage at my parent’s basement. Now, to give some context, after graduating high school at 17, I left Akron and moved two hours away to Toledo for school. Little did I think then that I would live in Toledo for 8 years prior to returning home. Over the course of 8 years, 6 different housing/apartments, and over a variety of different roommates and living situations, I had collected a large amount of ‘sentimental stuff’ that I once found really hard to let go of due to the ‘value’ I had given them. I am so happy to say that this past weekend, I went through all of it and ended up donating and throwing away over half of the items.

As you can imagine, it was quite the intervention and a timely one.

You see, what I quickly realized over the past month is that just because you no longer have something physically there in front of you, it does not mean it never happened nor does it take away what you gained from that experience.  Sure, there will also be those one or two items that no matter what, you cannot find yourself throwing it away, but then you have to ask yourself that if you start keeping everything (yes, I am talking about you people who collect movie theater stubs, hahaha), then where is the REAL sentimental stuff actually sitting? In fact, where (and when) will you start making space for the memories and experiences that you are going through in present day?

It is funny when we come to a point in our lives where we are ready to let go of one thing to gain something better… whether it is a closet of clothing, a rack full of shoes, a basement full of college memories, or even a heart full of emotional baggage.

Hopefully you are having that ‘ah-ha’ moment right now.

You see friends, although letting go may be hard at times and we try to hold on to the small things that remind of us where we once were, you will quickly also discover that letting go is truly a portal for self-growth. Letting go is a sign that you have EVOLVED and when you realize the evolution of the amazing person you have become, and deserve, you will ask yourself why you kept all your old stuff in the first place. Embrace emptiness because emptiness opens opportunities for fulfillment, and I can guarantee you, it is worth the wait. Personally, I have never been so excited, physically, mentally, and emotionally, to let go because I am beyond ecstatic for all this space I have created in my mind, heart, and closet (haha) for the possibilities that the present (*wink*) may hold.

You only upgrade from here friends, remember that! =)
